Hatching Hope: Conservation Breakthroughs in November 2024

November 2024 was a month of celebration, growth, and critical milestones for Wildlife Rescue Centre Jogja. As we continued to navigate our transition and conservation challenges, this month brought encouraging progress in our efforts to protect endangered wildlife and strengthen our capacity.

This November, we celebrated the first birthday of our Malayan giant turtle hatchlings, a significant milestone in our conservation program. These hatchlings, born from a successful collaboration with Gembira Loka Zoo, Konklusi, Herpetofauna Foundation, and supported by BKSDA Yogya and IUCN ASAP, symbolize a brighter future for this critically endangered species. Their growth over the past year highlights the importance of collaborative conservation efforts and strengthens our resolve to protect biodiversity for generations to come.

On November 12th, one of our members attended the Indonesia Small Apes Medicine Seminar, an event that provided valuable insights into the care and conservation of small apes, further strengthening our knowledge and practices in primate medicine.

To strengthen our team’s capacity in conservation, we have actively participated in various workshops and personal development programs. November marked a significant milestone as Cisca celebrated her graduation from the ASAP Women in Conservation Visible Leadership Programme (WiCVLP). This program has been instrumental in honing her leadership skills, expanding her network, and empowering her to drive impactful conservation initiatives. The combination of these opportunities further solidifies Cisca’s role as a leader in conservation, ensuring that WRC Jogja continues to thrive in its mission to protect wildlife and biodiversity.

Additionally, Cisca also had the opportunity to participate in the Project Design and Fundraising Training, a six-month program conducted in partnership with ASAP. This training is a crucial step toward strengthening our financial stability, particularly as we focus on relocating and re-establishing our facility. Through the program, we hope our members could gain valuable knowledge and innovative strategies to design impactful projects, engage donors effectively, and secure the resources needed to sustain and expand our mission.

The ASAP team recently visited WRC Jogja to conduct an evaluation and discuss potential areas for future collaboration. During the visit, they reviewed ongoing programs, assessed the organization’s needs, and explored opportunities to strengthen conservation efforts. The discussions focused on aligning shared goals, enhancing project impact, and identifying innovative strategies for wildlife conservation. This visit marks a significant step forward in fostering a deeper partnership between ASAP and WRC Jogja, paving the way for impactful joint initiatives in the future.

November saw continued focus on the logistics of our relocation process. While the challenges remain, progress is being made to identify a new site that aligns with our mission. This includes ensuring operational sustainability, enhancing staff capacity, and maintaining strong partnerships.

With the close of the year on the horizon, we are gearing up for an impactful December. From celebrating our achievements to setting ambitious goals for 2025, the Wildlife Rescue Centre Jogja remains committed to protecting wildlife and empowering communities.
