Strategic planning is crucial for any organization to set long-term goals and direction. We’ve developed a three-year strategic plan to guide our decisions and resource allocation. This process involved in-depth discussions with stakeholders and operational staff, breaking down strategic goals into concrete programs with performance indicators for easy monitoring. In February 2024, we updated our strategic plan to accommodate the relocation and development of WRC Jogja. This annual review evaluates completed and pending programs and plans for the coming year based on the strategic guidelines.
Implementing the strategy requires commitment from the entire organization, making awareness and understanding of the plan essential. Our current strategic activities include conservation education, strengthening partnerships with local and international conservation organizations, and capacity building for staff through various trainings. In February, our Conservation Program Conservation, drh. Irhamna Putri, delivered a lecture on animal welfare concepts via Zoom to FKH UB, aligning with our goal of spreading conservation knowledge, especially among the youth, to be used for the future.
As part of our “Saving Malayan Giant Turtle from the Brink of Extinction” project, Phase I involves establishing a healthy and genetically viable assurance colony. We conducted routine checks on the Malayan Giant Turtles (Orlitia borneensis) to monitor their growth and health, including weight measurements, sex determination, blood sampling, and pond water quality checks. On February 13, 2024, we performed these checks with the help of Gembira Loka Zoo’s medical team, with further examinations planned for the following month due to time constraints.
Our research on Malayan Giant Turtle extends beyond breeding programs to Phase II, which involves initiating species conservation actions on Belitung Island, Sumatra. This phase starts with selecting a release site for the turtles in Tebat Rasau, East Belitung. We’re preparing plans, schedules, and funding allocations for this continuation, funded by IUCN ASAP.
As a non-profit conservation organization, collaborating with various partners is essential. We recently had a zoom meeting with Key Conservation, a global platform supporting conservation efforts by connecting organizations with supporters who provide funding, skills, and resources. This partnership will help us broaden our network and enhance our conservation impact.
