June Highlights: Engaging in Conservation and Educational Initiatives

While we have paused our wildlife rehabilitation activities due to the ongoing relocation process, our conservation efforts have not come to a halt. We have engaged in several collaborative initiatives and participated in various conservation activities.

In early June, over three days, drh. Irhamna Putri our Conservation Programme Supervisor, served as a speaker at the National Wildlife Rescue SOP Training event in Jakarta, organized by the Ministry of Environment. This was an extraordinary opportunity to share knowledge with others, aiming to enhance understanding and improve practices in wildlife rescue.

We also had a follow-up meeting in Tebat Rasau, East Belitung, to discuss the Wildlife Rescue Centre’s survey results. The results were summarized and plans were made for the next steps, including the implementation of FGD and Training on Survey Monitoring and Wildlife Training for the local residents of Tebat Rasau in July. The meeting focused on planning for these upcoming activities, preparing logistical needs, administrative requirements, and some necessary preparations.

Still in June 2024, the Wildlife Rescue Centre attended a public seminar organized by the IUCN SSC Asian Songbird Trade Specialist Group at the Atmajaya University, Yogyakarta. The seminar was attended by various conservation organizations and communities dedicated to the conservation of songbirds. The Wildlife Rescue Centre gained valuable insights into how these organizations handle illegal trade, particularly in combating communities that label themselves as bird lovers but are involved in selling birds. Through various approaches, significant positive impacts have been achieved. The Centre also learned about the different species of songbirds in Indonesia, their distribution, and the priorities for their protection. Additionally, the Wildlife Rescue Centre aimed to expand its network with other conservation organizations, recognizing that building relationships can facilitate its conservation activities.

In addition to building connections and collaborating with others, we participated in the annual Conservation Education activity called CESAWA (Camping with Saka Wanabakti Kulon Progo) in June 28-29, 2024. This event, in partnership with Saka Wanabakti and Pramuka Kulon Progo, was sponsored by Universitas Brawijaya. Over two days and nights at Laguna Pantai Glagah Kulon Progo, around 25 students from SMAN 1 Kalibawang joined. The event featured an introduction to wildlife conservation by the Wildlife Rescue Centre, a presentation on plant species by Forkommadika, Biology UGM, and a session on flora and fauna inventory by three Brawijaya University students. Our goal is to continue this activity yearly, giving local students in Kulon Progo valuable conservation knowledge to share with their peers.

Reflecting on these activities, June 2024 was a month filled with significant conservation efforts, educational outreach, and collaborative planning by the Wildlife Rescue Centre. Each event and meeting contributed to strengthening our mission of protecting endangered species and promoting sustainable conservation practices.
