Collaboration Project for Conservation Education, SMAN 1 Kalibawang

One of WRC Jogja’s goals is to raise public understanding and awareness of wildlife conservation through research, education, community outreach, and public involvement. We shall persist in giving education for conservation first priority. Even with our severely limited personnel resources at the moment, our work is made possible by the strong support and participation of many people. Aside from that, WRC Jogja—which is currently in the process of relocation—will keep up its commitment to taking part in conservation education initiatives.

On August 2 and 3, Veterinary Medicine Brawijaya University and YKAY – WRC Jogja organized a conservation education event at SMA Negeri 1 Kalibawang, Kulonprogo, in partnership with Saka Wanabakti-DKC Kulon Progo, and Forkommadika UGM. The event was funded by the Department of Veterinary Medicine Brawijaya University and the crowdsourcing website kitabisadotcom.

Students are expected to learn about the local flora and fauna and become knowledgeable about how to protect them by participating in Conservation Education: Introduction and Inventory of Native Flora and Fauna in the Kalibawang-Banjaroyo Region.

Thirty students, who were also involved in scouting, attended this event. The purpose of this event is to spread awareness of how crucial it is to protect the environment and the creatures that inhabit it. Students are encouraged to conduct bird observations, and there is also an introduction to the different kinds of birds that may be seen around their residences. It is hoped that through this activity, students will care more about the surrounding environment and help maintain its sustainability.

In Pramuka, we learn to protect, preserve, and appreciate the incredible ecosystems that surround us. We learn how we are intertwined and need each other. Let’s continue to be the guardians of our environment. Salam Pramuka!

Tojeiro volunteered at WRC in 2018 and instantly fell in love. He decided to leave his job in the Netherlands to work alongside our keepers, managing projects and making sure all the animals get the best care possible. During the relocation period, Tojeiro studied animal health management to increase his capacity in the field of animal welfare.
