Empowering Conservation: A Journey in Leadership

15 participants from across South East Asia

We are grateful that this year, one of our team members had the opportunity to participate once again in the Women in Conservation Visible Leadership Program organized by IUCN SSC Asian Species Action Partnership. This marks another valuable milestone for our organization, which has recently undergone a transition, enabling us to implement conservation efforts for the almost extinct species more holistically.

We recognize that such training program is essential because working in the field of conservation requires coordinated efforts that are often complex and dynamic. Leaders should be equipped with the skills needed to handle conflicts constructively, ensuring the focus remains on achieving conservation goals. These skills include navigating crises and setbacks, inspiring and motivating their teams, influencing their surroundings to achieve greater collective efforts, and ensuring high levels of engagement and commitment. By developing these capabilities, conservation efforts become more resilient and sustainable.

The training began with a retreat in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The retreat kicked off with two days of insightful content, followed by a memorable one-day excursion that allowed us to explore the beautiful surroundings of Siem Reap. We concluded with a half-day session dedicated to integration and post-retreat planning.

One of the highlights of this retreat was the formation of deep connections with fellow participants and the facilitation team. The retreat featured meaningful discussions, particularly about the barriers women face in conservation and how to overcome mindset challenges. The program guided these remarkable women leaders through a wellbeing framework, habit-building, values elicitation, vision creation, and coaching skills.

Our representative, Cisca Nurfiaini said, “This retreat was a life-changing experience, filled with learning, growth, and deep connections. I left Siem Reap feeling inspired and equipped to take on new challenges.”

There are still several meetings left in the coming months until the final graduation. We congratulate and wish all participants the best of luck as they continue to engage in these inspiring sessions!

Finally, a huge thanks to IUCN SSC Asian Species Action Partnership for making these possible, to Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity for kindly hosting this retreat and to the wonderful coaches Sarilani Wirawan, MSi., LCPC, ACC, Vik Mohan, and the wonderful team from Visibility Co !

Tojeiro volunteered at WRC in 2018 and instantly fell in love. He decided to leave his job in the Netherlands to work alongside our keepers, managing projects and making sure all the animals get the best care possible. During the relocation period, Tojeiro studied animal health management to increase his capacity in the field of animal welfare.
