Internship Program

WRC is not only home to several orangutans but also an array of Indonesian wildlife that have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade: sun bears, eagles, gibbons, monkeys, parrots, crocodiles, and turtles. When you intern with WRC, you will be able to work closely with these animals alongside the animal keepers, veterinarians, and office staff. It is an excellent opportunity to dive right in and experience, firsthand, all that goes into running an animal rescue center.

Our center is run by just a few dedicated staff, so we welcome volunteers and interns to help and bring new ideas. Internship program descriptions are a guideline, so we are flexible and can shift your duties according to your specific skill set and goals. With programs focusing on animal welfare, veterinary work, education, the environment, or marketing and communications, you can be sure that your time here will equip you with the skills and knowledge for a career in conservation.

Requirements

To apply, you must be at least 18 years old with 6 months to 1 year of relevant conservation work experience, but those with experience in other related areas are encouraged to apply. Internationals as well as locals are eligible. Fluency in English is a requirement for all internships, and Bahasa Indonesia ability is a major asset. Please refer to the individual internship programs for further requirements and job details. A medical check and proof of vaccinations will be required prior to your stay. Interns will be mentored by our on site wildlife veterinarian.

Upon completion of the program, interns are required to present their work and write a report on their time here. A certificate will be given upon request.

Cost

WRC Jogja depends on donations and program fees; therefore, we are unable to reimburse travel and accommodation costs. Your contribution goes directly toward covering the cost of your stay here. Please be advised that for some projects, materials may not be available and we are unable to provide them, so you are strongly encouraged to self-provide some materials to support and implement your projects. We will do our best to support your plans, but the upkeep of the center and animals comes first.

OUR ON-SITE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY ON HOLD

During this period of relocation, we are unable to accommodate internship program activities. We understand that many of you have generously offered your time and skills to support our cause, and we deeply regret any inconvenience caused by this temporary suspension. Rest assured, once we have settled into our new location and established our operations, we will enthusiastically welcome internships again.

The main support we are looking for is related to the crucial fundraising campaign we are running for our site relocation project. We extend a warm welcome to everyone who would like to be involved in the fundraising efforts and would like to support this cause. Anyone can contribute from anywhere in the world to reach global support. Please feel free to get in touch with us personally if you require any additional information regarding this topic.

Stay connected with us through our website and social media channels for updates on our progress and future opportunities to get involved. In the meantime, we would like to express our gratitude for your unwavering support and encourage you to explore other opportunities in your community. Your passion and commitment to making a difference can positively impact various organizations in need.

The vet intern will assist our vet in carrying out daily health observation, routine health examinations, preventative and curative treatment, and developing a veterinary care SOP. Applicants must be current veterinary students in their second year or above. You will gain skills in handling and treating a wide variety of wild animals and will actively participate in rehabilitation processes. Minimum 1 month for foreigners, minimum 2 weeks for Indonesians Fluency in English is not a requirement, though it is an asset.

Animal welfare and education interns will look after the non-medical aspects of animal care and education programs. You will help monitor the behavior and conditions of animals undergoing rehabilitation as well as continue and develop the animal enrichment program. Interns will work alongside the animal welfare coordinator to plan and implement enclosure improvement projects, rehabilitation processes, and general animal care. You will also work closely with the conservation education coordinator to develop and run educational programs like community presentations, school group activities, bird watching, and conservation programs. Minimum 1 month for all applicants.

We are looking for those experienced in or interested in organic waste management to help us find the best solutions to reduce and manage our waste and make WRC a more eco-friendly establishment. Every day, we sort through heaps of waste produce donated from local supermarkets to pick the best-quality food for our animals. However, the majority of produce is unsuitable and is disposed of, leaving vast amounts of organic waste along with its plastic packaging. Many aspects of waste management around the center could be improved, so we are looking for someone who is passionate about sustainability and the environment to implement protocols at WRC to deal with these issues. You could be involved with composting, making eco bricks, organic gardening, and anything else you can think of!

As biology and forestry interns, you have the exciting opportunity to contribute to the non-medical aspects of animal care and education programs. Your role involves monitoring the behavior and conditions of animals undergoing rehabilitation and expanding upon the animal enrichment program. Alongside the animal welfare coordinator, you will actively participate in planning and implementing enclosure improvement projects, rehabilitation processes, and general animal care. Your involvement also extends to collaborating closely with the conservation education coordinator in developing and facilitating educational programs such as community presentations, school group activities, and even birdwatching. This internship allows you to apply your knowledge in a professional yet fun environment, making a positive impact on both animal welfare and conservation education. So, get ready to dive into the world of biology and forestry, where your skills and passion meet for an unforgettable experience!

We are still a growing organization, and the majority of our funding comes from our volunteer program. Marketing interns will run our Instagram and Facebook accounts, focusing on gaining followers and promoting our programs, especially volunteering. You will update our website and blog, run the virtual adoption program, and help write the quarterly newsletter. We are looking for someone with experience who can implement marketing strategies for both our local and international audiences. Minimum of six weeks for all applicants.

Our center is on a large piece of land mostly covered in forest. Over the years, old pathways and enclosure areas have become overgrown and unused. We are opening up to a broader range of nature lovers with new programs, and our grounds need to be as welcoming and accessible as ever! We are looking for a landscape architecture student with a minimum of one year of experience in landscape design to make our center as beautiful as the animals that inhabit it. You will plan and implement landscaping projects on your own with a small budget.

Tojeiro volunteered at WRC in 2018 and instantly fell in love. He decided to leave his job in the Netherlands to work alongside our keepers, managing projects and making sure all the animals get the best care possible. During the relocation period, Tojeiro studied animal health management to increase his capacity in the field of animal welfare.
