Amplifying Conservation Through Storytelling and Media Engagement

At Wildlife Rescue Centre (WRC) Jogja, we recognize that communication and storytelling are powerful tools for conservation. In recent months, our team has actively engaged in several initiatives aimed at enhancing our capacity to communicate effectively, build public awareness, and share our conservation journey with a broader audience.

One of the key activities was a coordination meeting for the Orlitia conservation program, which included a knowledge enrichment session on the topic of “The Use of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Social Media.” This session was delivered by one of our foundation’s supervisors and attended by members of the WRC Jogja social media team. The training was designed to deepen participants’ understanding of ethical content creation, appropriate media usage, and the challenges of digital writing. It emphasized the importance of using media responsibly, especially when representing conservation work and engaging the public through digital platforms.

In addition to internal capacity building, WRC Jogja also participated in and supported a film screening and seminar titled “Cerita dari Jogja Untuk Bumi: Alam Bukan Warisan, Tapi Titipan” (Stories from Jogja for the Earth: Nature is not something we inherit, but something we borrow). Organized by WCF Jogja in collaboration with 4K.Yogyakarta, COP, JAWI, and Swara OWA, the event took place at the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada. It featured environmental films and talks from local conservation organizations, including ours. The event provided an inspiring space for collaboration and learning, bringing together students, researchers, and conservationists to reflect on our shared responsibility toward nature.

Further extending our outreach efforts, one of our veterinarians (drh. Irhamna Putri) was invited to speak at the “Cerita Cangkang” (the stories of a shell) talk show hosted by Naturalist Hub. During the session, she shared insights from our work on the Malayan Giant Turtle conservation program, a collaborative initiative aimed at protecting a critically endangered freshwater turtle species. Her talk highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration and the role of local communities in ensuring the success of conservation actions. By telling the story of the Malayan Giant Turtle, we hope to inspire others to take part in protecting freshwater biodiversity, an often overlooked yet vital component of our natural ecosystems.

Through these activities, WRC Jogja continues to uphold its mission of conserving wildlife and fostering public engagement through education, storytelling, and collaboration. We are grateful to all our partners, speakers, and participants who have contributed to these meaningful conversations and initiatives. Together, we strive to protect not only individual species but also the shared future of our planet.
