About Beni

  • Species: Bornean Orangutan
    (Pongo pygmaeus)
  • Sex: Male
  • Birthday: 1999
  • Arrival: 14th October 2006

I was rescued from an illegal mini-zoo in Central Java. They kept me in a tiny 1.5m x 1.5m cage; now I suffer from back problems due to being in a stooped position for so many years. I can never go back to the wild, but they look after me very well here at WRC. I’m super shy and I don’t like it at all when there are new people around. The trauma of my zoo upbringing means I can’t make eye contact with humans. I need peace and quiet around my enclosure to feel relaxed. I like it when the keepers bring me fruit boxes and fruit parcels, but I wait until I’m alone to sneak out and get them. You’ll never see me without my favourite tire!
